How Gov Laboso Beat Moi's Aide to Launch Political Career

The late Bomet Governor, Joyce Laboso, made headlines in 2017, after becoming one of the first female county bosses

Laboso was born in 1960 and has passed on at the age of 58, having lived a very inspiring life, which she received endless praises for.

Political background

Her political career began when she succeeded her sister, the late Sotik MP, Lorna Laboso, who died in a plane crash in 2008.

Vying on an ODM ticket, she garnered 23,880 votes with a margin of 10,000 over her closest challenger, retired Brigadier Alexander Sitienei (a former aide to Daniel Arap Moi), who received 13,843 votes.

During the next General Election, in 2013, she decamped to URP and upon retaining her seat in Parliament, she was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.

Education background

Her education started at Kaplong and Molo Primary schools where she qualified to join Kaplong Girls Secondary School for her O levels.

The late governor advanced to Kenya High School, where her performance helped her secure admission at Kenyatta University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature and Education in 1983.

The following year, Laboso went on to enrol for a Post Graduate Diploma in French teaching.

Between 1989-1991, the departed county chief was a graduate student at the University of Reading, UK, studying for a Masters in English as a foreign language.

She died having attained a PhD in Gender and Language Education from the University of Hull.

Employment history.

Laboso started out as a high school teacher at Kipsigis Girls High School in 1985, before moving on to become an assistant lecturer at Egerton University by 1990.

The next year, she became a fully-fledged lecturer in the same school and was appointed assistant dean a year later.

From 2003 to 2006, she taught at Farrow House Education Center, Hull, United Kingdom.

Just before her political star shone, Laboso was a coordinator for communication and media, library and information studies programmes at Egerton University.
