On Tuesday, Kiirnyaga County Speaker, who was fronted by the Jubilee Party, stepped down from his role.
David Githanda Wachira resigned citing personal reasons. His resignation will be effective on August 15, 2019.
“Hopefully, from the date of this letter to the said date, the Assembly shall have commenced the process of appointment of a Speaker to ensure a smooth transition.
"I wish to thank Her Excellency Governor Anne Waiguru, all County Assembly members, the Clerk of the Assembly and embers of the staff for their cooperation during the period I served as Speaker and Chair of the County Assembly Service Board," Wachira wrote in his resignation letter.
The lawyer had practised law for over 32 years before taking up the County Speaker’s position.
He graduated in 1984 with an LLB Degree (Hons) from the University of Nairobi and in September 1985, was admitted to the bar after obtaining Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law.
Kirinyanga County Assembly has over the past months been rocked by differences between the members and Governor Anne Waiguru.
In January 2019, the governor refuted claims of a fallout between her and the county assembly.
She noted that differences between her and a few ward reps should not be misconstrued to mean differences with the entire assembly.
At one point, some ward reps threatened to impeach Waiguru after she slashed a Ksh70 million bursary fund to Ksh40 million.
However, the governor downplayed the threat, accusing some MCAs of plotting to control the bursary fund.
