On Sunday, Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the plight of unemployed youth in the country.
Sonko spoke with the youth at Naivasha during a stopover on his way to Nairobi from Kisumu, after attending the burial of the late Bomet Governor, Joyce Laboso.
“There are so many factories and flower farms in Naivasha that collapsed and we call on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and help save the situation.
“There are so many jobless youths in Naivasha and we should give them the opportunity to serve in the projects being implemented other than looking for manpower elsewhere,” Sonko pleaded.
Hundreds of flower farm workers were rendered jobless after the closure of some farms.
Sonko thus saw it urgent to address the challenges facing flower farms which were the main source of employment in the town.
He reflected on the closure of the once flourishing Karuturi flower farm, noting that over 4,000 residents lost their jobs critically affecting the lakeside town’s economy.
On Monday, Sonko launched a free cancer screening drive within Nairobi.
The governor took to his Facebook page to notify residents within the capital city of the centres where they could access the free service.
"The exercise will run for the whole week at Mama Lucy and Mbagathi hospitals respectively," Sonko affirmed.
