A cheeky driver in Nairobi was smart enough to capture a traffic officer demanding a bribe from him.
In the video circulating online, the officer and the driver are heard negotiating how much he is willing to part with. The female officer demands Ksh1,500 while the driver insists he has Ksh1,000.
It is not clear how the driver managed to pull the stunt of driving while recording the lady officer as the negotiations continued.
“Tafadhali unisaidie tu, wewe ni mtu wa Eastleigh na unakuaga hapa daily. Hii pesa unaitisha sina lazima nikope mtu 1,500 na ni ngumu kupata (Please just help me, you are usually here in Eastleigh on a daily basis, I don't have the amount you are asking for, I have to borrow Ksh 1,500 and its hard to find),” the driver is heard stating.
The rather agitated officer then asks if he is joking by telling her that he has Ksh1000, but the driver confirms that indeed he had the money.
“Kwani hata ile elfu moja ulisema uko nayo ulikua ukope (Do you mean you had to borrow even the thousand shillings you said you had)?” the officer questioned.
She then stretches out her hand towards the driver as an indication that she wants him to hand over the Ksh 1,000
The video was leaked to the Twitter handle @ma3route by Abdul Qafar who tagged the National Police Service(NPS), claiming that this was a normal event, especially at Pangani and Shauri Moyo Police Stations.
NPS confirmed receiving the complaint and forwarding it to the relevant office for further action.
“This has been received and forwarded to the Nairobi Region/County Police Commander for his attention and relevant action too. Thank you,” NPS replied to the tweet.
The video provoked mixed reactions from netizens with others stating the driver was also as liable for offering a bribe.
