Police Lob Teargas at Nairobi Youth Protesting Over Census Jobs

Police officers were, on Thursday, forced to use teargas canisters to disperse a group of youth in Kangemi, Nairobi.

The altercation came about after local youth took to the streets to protest the hiring of individuals from other counties for the census process.

"They have brought in officials who are not from Westlands constituency and the residents do not have jobs. This is not fair. My plea to the government is that they should first consider Kangemi residents," one of the protesting youth maintained.

The census officials were conducting a training section at the Kihumbuini primary school when the incident took place.

The youth also stated that they would not allow the census officials at their homes.

"I sent in my CV, I also sat for an exam but to date, I have never received any call or text message. Today morning, I got wind of the information that those who were conducting the process were not from the area. One of them asked me where Kihumbuini is and yet he is a Kangemi resident," another resident lamented.

Police officers had to intervene by lobbing teargas canisters at the angry youth.

On Friday, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), announced that the annual Kenya Population and Housing Census is set to take place on the night of 24th August 2019.

KEBS noted that this would be the 8th census to be conducted in Kenya.
