Lonyangapuo Causes Drama During Protest

West Pokot Governor, John Lonyangapuo, caused drama in his county when he decided to ride on a motorbike on Thursday, in protest of the revenue division impasse.

In the video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the governor and several other officials demonstrated while riding on the motorbikes through the county.

County employees have not received their salaries from July and August. It is unfair to hear of workers striking in counties because of not being paid, despite having worked. An average of more than 3,000 workers in every county are suffering.

The delay has greatly affected operations, with Health, Education, Water, Disaster Management & Public Works, County Public Service and Procurement departments being the most affected,” Lonyangapuo complained.

A major financial crisis is looming in West Pokot County following the delay by the National Treasury to release funds for counties, because of the stalemate between the Senate and National Assembly.

Development projects in the county have stalled and workers have not been paid their salaries. It has been more than two months now and activities in the county are at a halt.

On Wednesday, during the launch of a muti-million County Assembly in Nakuru, President Uhuru Kenyatta maintained his ground that governors would not receive more money apart from the Ksh316 billion the National Assembly had allocated them.

The governors, together with senators, had been pushing for the allocation to be raised to Ksh335 billion, that the Commission on Revenue Allocation gave counties for the financial year 2019/2020.

It is unfortunate that every day has turned out to a competition between the two Houses while Kenyans are now suffering the brunt of this standoff.

"With all due respect, agree with me that there is money, so that the little available funds can be released ,so that Kenyans can be served,” affirmed Uhuru.
