Miguna Attacks Nation Over Reformed Robber's Story

Firebrand lawyer, Miguna Miguna, is at it again, this time breathing fire at Nation newspaper.

The local publication ran a story about a reformed robber who was released from jail at the age of 42, which did not go down well with the self-declared National Resistance Movement leader.

The story titled, “Tales of courage: Former Robber Restarts Life at Age 4” made the exiled lawyer bash the media, claiming they were glorifying robbers

He questioned the use of the word 'courage' in the title, noting that the said person had spent a portion of his life in crime.

A person who stops being a robber at 42 is not "courageous". He is a coward who spent a third of his life stealing. The Kenyan media must stop glorifying thieves, robbers, murderers and other criminals,” Miguna wrote on Facebook.

The former aide of ODM leader Raila Odinga further stated that the fourth estate made it seem as if they were celebrating crime in the country.

A life of crime is nothing to celebrate,” he added.

The article, though, was narrating the life of Nicholas Ouma Obonyo who walked into prison in 2005 at the age of 28 and released in July of 2019, aged 42.

Obonyo had been sentenced to death on January 17, 2001, after being in remand for a year. He exhausted his appeals in 2005.

He had been sentenced to death after being found guilty of robbery with violence, and was subsequently jailed at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, awaiting his date with the executioner.

Luckily for Obonyo, retired President Mwai Kibaki commuted all death sentences to life imprisonment in 2009.

Before his release Obonyo had been transferred severally to the Eldoret, Kamiti, Kibos, Kodiaga, Naivasha, Shimo la Tewa, King’ong’o and Manyani prisons.
