Most Kenyans are familiar with Interior CS Fred Matiang'i because of he is a national figure and incharge of most important docket in President Uhuru's Kenyatta's Cabinet.
However, only a few know that the powerful CS has a sibling who also holds one of the top offices in Kenya.
John Matiang'i is the national treasure at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and was among the key figures who orchestrated Wilson Sossion's ouster at the union.
The soft-spoken boss, a direct opposite of Fred Matiang'i, John has made headlines on a few occasions.
In May 2018, he turned down a lucrative government job; to become a commissioner of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
According to reports, he declined to accept the nomination since the position would have required him to work full time.
He has also spoken at times on behalf of the Matiang'i family.
In 2017, he spoke to the media thwarting claims that the Interior CS's house was on fire after several pictures trended online.
"The house of Fred Matiang’i is intact and no intruder has been spotted. Treat whatever you’re seeing as malicious propaganda," John defended.
In 2004 to 2008, John undertook his first degree at University of Nairobi. A Bachelor of Education in Kiswahili and Geography.
He then joined the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, for a Masters's degree in Education Administration in 2010-2013.
He completed his education with a PhD at the University of Nairobi where he became a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration.
Matiang'i's brother went on to join the Teacher's Service Commission for 14 years, from 1990-2000. He became an Assistant Teacher for six years and a Deputy Head Teacher for four years. He became a Head Teacher between 2000 and 2004.
For two years, between 2006 and 2008, he was elevated to a Student Leader Module of the private students at Nairobi University.
His staged his entry into KNUT in 2008, where he became a Branch Executive Secretary for 6 years.
In 2014, he became the National Treasurer of the union, a position he currently holds.
The veteran teacher is also married and in 2016, he penned an emotional letter praising his wife upon her graduation at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, Nandi County.
"You have shaped my life. You are a wonderful mother to my children. You've supported me and stood by my side in times of need. Your struggle for our family is immeasurable.
"You've worked with lots of determination to be here today. My dear wife, I leave all that I was doing today to stand by you with a lot of joy and thanksgiving to God as you graduate today. This far is Ebenezer," John posted on his Facebook page.
