County Loses Ksh 300M in Job Scandal

The County Government of Nyamira lost about Ksh300 million in a job scam that went on for a period of over four years.

According to a report by the Nyamira Payroll Audit Task Force, there were irregular job promotions and falsified salary arrears that were paid.

Governor John Nyagarama had ordered the investigations into the scandal.

According to The Standard, hundreds of county employees had their job grades irregularly raised, while the beneficiaries of irregular employment claimed salary arrears amounting to hundreds of millions, after faking appointment letters.

Most of the illegally employed staff backdated their appointment letters for up to 12 months. As a result, they would claim salary arrears for the entire period (that was) backdated,” read part of the report.

In 2015, the county lost Ksh15 million to illegal promotions while in 2016, Ksh60 million was lost in promotions and falsified salary arrears.

2017 was the most catastrophic year after Nyamira lost Ksh151 million in the same manner.

In 2018 and part of 2019, it is estimated that Ksh30 million was lost in the racket.

Public Service Management Executive, Bernard Osumo claimed that all monies lost in the racket would be fully recovered from the beneficiaries.
