DNA tests have laid to rest months of anguish for two mothers Dorothy Kawira and Evaline Ndinda who were at the center of a baby-swapping saga at the Mama Lucy Hospital in July.
The test results, released on Monday, September 2, confirmed that the babies were not swapped at birth as the parents had alleged.
The DNA results from the Government chemist show that Kawira is indeed the mother to baby Kezia Makena while Ndida is the mother to Evalyne Ndinda Musyoka.
Dr. Musa Mohamed, the medical superintendent at Mama Lucy Hospital, stated that since the DNA investigation was done by a government agency, the results should be deemed satisfactory and conclusive.
"The DNA has shown that there was no swapping. It was a minor confusion," he is quoted in a statement by the County Government of Nairobi.
The fathers of the babies arrived at the facility on Tuesday morning and expressed their satisfaction with the entire process.
"I appreciate the efforts because they responded immediately and all we want now is to go home," Duncan Mberia, the father to Makena is quoted.
Nairobi County Health Executive Mohamed Dagane hailed the successful tests, noting that the county has beefed up surveillance at its major facilities to avoid any incidences of baby swapping and baby theft.
A delighted governor Mike Sonko asked the health department at the hospital to be more vigilant and ensure such cases do not occur in the future.
The two families had asked the DCI to intervene and shed light on the unfortunate event. She said that she had been warned by other women about the hospital that cases of swapping children were on the rise.
"I confirmed my baby was a girl, the following day when my wife went to breastfeed her, she found another woman breastfeeding the baby. Doctors then brought us an identity tag indicating our baby was a boy and not a girl," she had alleged.
The Mama Lucy Hospital has found itself in the eye of the storm many times pertaining to the issue of swapping babies.
On August 30, a couple was crying for justice after allegedly losing their twins at the Mama Lucy Hospital.
