DP Ruto Lands in Trouble With Journalists Over Harassment

Deputy President, William Ruto, has landed in trouble with a section of journalists over claims of repeated harassment by his security detail.

In a letter penned by the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) and signed by Secretary General, Erick Oduor, the journalists demanded a public apology from the DP.

They specifically cited two incidents that had occurred over the past two months.

“The latest such incident took place on September 1, during a fundraiser at Kangata Catholic Church in Kirinyaga, during which Nation Media Group journalist George Munene was manhandled and detained by your security detail without any cause,” Oduor stated.

The DP was also reminded of an incident that occurred on August 10, during the wedding of Amos Ole Mpaka at Ng'ambo in Baringo, where journalists claim to have been roughed up and assaulted by his security detail.

The union now wants the deputy president to assist in taking legal action against those accused.

“We demand an immediate apology from you as a state officer and an assurance that your office will assist the victims in pursuing legal redress.

"We also want an assurance that acts of impunity against journalists shall cease,” the letter read.
