DPP Haji Jumps to Defence of Dog-cooking Man Over Hunger

DPP Noordin Haji rushed to the aid of a man arrested cooking dog meat in Tharaka Nithi County on Thursday, September 5.

The DPP ordered for the immediate release of the hunger-stricken man.

The DPP through Twitter further directed the county criminal investigation officer to liaise with the county commissioner to provide the man identified as John Munene with adequate food.

Police arrested Munene at his home in Karimba, Maara Sub-County, and was charged with slaughtering and cooking his dog with the intention of eating it as reported by Nation.

In his defence, Munene stated that hunger propelled him into the act as he had gone for three days without food.

"I was ashamed of persistently begging my neighbours for food.

"I, therefore, was preparing the dog meat with the small ugali that I had already cooked," Munene defended.

The suspect was held at Chogoria Police Station before arraignment in Chuka on Friday, September 5.

According to the Laws of Kenya, Section 3(3) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, a person found guilty of cruelty to animals is liable to a fine not exceeding Sh3,000, or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months, or to both.

Hunger has ravened various parts of the country due to prolonged drought.
