Retired President Daniel Arap Moi was a man loved and loathed by Kenyans in equal measures during his 24-year rule of the country.
During Moi's iron-fisted rule, he was known for never mincing his words no matter what the topic or audience was.
In the video shared by Standard Digital Videos, Moi was speaking about constitutional change and sympathising with Kenyans over the issue.
In 1997 Moi had selected ruling party and opposition politicians to serve on an Inter-Parties Parliamentary Group (IPPG) with responsibility for constitutional change while excluding the broad-based National Convention Executive Council (NCEC).
The undated video estimated to have been recorded at around 1999 at a time when the reform crisis had remained unresolved and the year had been characterized by mistrust, infighting, and a lack of consensus on the constitutional reform process.
The retired president warned against the politicisation of constitution matters noting that the constitution was not his but for all Kenyans.
"Katiba sio ya Moi, Katiba sio ya Kibaki ama kwa nani, katiba ni ya wakenya wote (the constitution does not belong to Moi or Kibaki but belongs to all Kenyans)," Moi retorted.
He criticised the MPs who he claimed had been given the mandate by 'wanjiku' but kept on bothering the same 'wanjiku' with questions on how to amend the constitution.
Noting that it had taken them over three years and they were yet to draft the constitution but kept on politicking about KANU's intention to hang on to power, he then threatened to call for an early election if they did not heed his call.
Moi then told the crowds that he was addressing that if the leaders kept with the path they had taken in the constitution change then he pitied this country.
"Kama viongozi wanaenda kwa njia wanayoenda, mimi nasema pole sana wakenya kwa siku zijazo (if the leaders keep going the way they are, I'm sorry about the coming days)," Moi added.
He noted that the leaders kept lying to Kenyans bout the gravity of constitutional change and how it would affect them.
With the current debate about the Building Bridges Initiative and the Punguza Mizigo with the mudslinging among leaders the words of Mzee Moi are coming to pass.
Kenyans are complaining about the constitution that was passed in 2010 and hence the push for further changes.
