Graduate police constables ganged up to ensure that top police bosses serve jail terms for disobeying court orders.
The 1,000 graduates are after the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, and National Police Service Commission chairperson, Eliud Kinuthia, as reported by Citizen TV, Thursday, September 3.
The two were accused of contempt of court, after refusing to comply with a court order directing that the graduates' salaries be raised as per the petition.
The graduates want to be paid salaries equivalent to the pay of an inspector of police.
According to the court orders, the pay hike should have been effected in August 2019.
The IG, however, reiterated that the graduates would not be given a pay hike.
He stated that such a move would be detrimental to the national budget since the government would require Ksh 928 million per year for its implementation as highlighted by Citizen TV.
According to the publication, Mutyambai also stated that the move would create more disparity within the police force.
The graduates may not get their money soon as the career progression guidelines for the National Police Service Uniformed Personnel 2016 does not provide a rank of a graduate constable in the service.
An ordinary police constable serves under job group F and earns a basic salary of Ksh19,290 while a graduate police constable serves under job group J, earning a basic salary of Ksh 42,600.
