New Twist as Tycoon in Sonko's Bribery Scandal Speaks Out

A tycoon linked to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Ksh357 million bribery claim on Wednesday, September 18, broke his silence about the whole saga.

In an interview with People Daily, the businessman, Antony Otieno Ombok, alias Jamal, denied claims that his companies had wired Ksh20 million to the county boss' personal accounts as kickbacks for winning the tender.

Sleuths from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are probing corruption allegations by firms associated with Ombok for allegedly controversially obtaining the garbage tenders.

He explained that his firms do not deal directly with the governor and that they are sub-contracted by other firms to provide services to them.

Getting specific, the businessman disclosed that his firm, Arbab Auto Ltd, was sub-contracted by Amaco Insurance Company Limited to repair Nairobi City County government-insured vehicles.

“There no evidence to support the allegations that our client was awarded a tender at Nairobi City County government.

“There is no tender documents or contracts executed with the county government of Nairobi nor any direct payments made to our client by city hall,” stated the tycoon.

Ombok further insisted that he had no direct business transaction with Sonko's administration.

In his defence, the county boss explained that the mysterious money that was found in his account arose from the businesses that he had engaged in before he became the governor.

"I would never touch a coin from the public," declared Sonko at the time.
