Raila Odinga gets Prestigious Fete

ODM leader Raila Odinga has been honoured with the Institute of Directors membership at the Intercontinental Hotel on Thursday, September 26.

The African Union High Representative for Infrastructure was invited as the guest speaker at the event and named the second honorary member of the Institute.

Raila gave a speech on corporate governance at the third annual Institue of Directors conference.

He was presented with a framed membership certificate as he joined a committee of 900 members who have undergone training and been vetted to join the Institute.

Raila commented on the recent conundrum at Mumias Sugar by saying most sugar companies in the country were on their death bed.

The former prime minister also mentioned that most corporations in the country were only surviving because of money being pumped in by the Treasury.

"We have a great country with intelligent people but we are not moving forward because of those at the top," he lamented.

Raila also disclosed that the country would not move forward if the prevailing corruption in the obtainment of business licenses persisted.

He said that success in building corporate governance in Kenya did not depend on what was being done in Beijing, London or Washington but what was being done locally.

The conference was also attended by Vincent Okongo who was representing the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Okongo reiterated that unethical behaviour resulted in mismanagement of resources that hampered the growth of corporate institutions.
