Tragic Accident Claims Prisoner's Life [VIDEO]

A tragic accident in Embu County has been reported to have claimed the life of one prisoner and injured 8 others.

The Daily Nation reported on Tuesday, October 1, that the Embu Prison vehicle was ferrying inmates to Meru when it rolled down near River Thuci.

Also reported injured were seven wardens who had been tasked with escorting them.

In an amateur video posted by the Daily Nation on Facebook, an overturned police vehicle is seen on the sides of the road, with prisoners' belongings strewn all over.

Reports indicate that the incident took place close to 80 Kilometers from Embu town, where the prisoners were being transported from, on the way to an unidentified detention facility in Meru.

Shimo La Tewa Prisons Boss Joseph Mutevesi confirmed the incident to Kenyans.co.ke and promised to share more details once his office receives more comprehensive information.

The incident comes just a day after chaos erupted at Kamiti Maximum Prison following a routine search for contrabands at the correctional facility.

The mayhem was allegedly triggered by the refusal of prisoners to surrender contrabands during a routine mop up.

According to Kenya Prisons Service spokesman, Dickson Mwakazi, the inmates boycotted breakfast after the officers decided to make an impromptu search for contraband.

“They refused to take the morning porridge and became rowdy to protest the search for contraband,” Mwakazi claimed.
