Ruto Allied MPs Want Mashujaa Day Cancelled, Here’s Why?

A group of women politicians want Mashujaa Day, scheduled for October 20, called off until the car that plunged into the Indian Ocean and its two occupants are recovered.

The Inua Mama MPs said it would be embarrassing for the celebrations to be held meters away from the scene of the tragedy that has left Kenyans in sadness.

Speaking at Muranga County on October 4, the legislators, led by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, vowed to marshall women to camp at the scene of the tragedy until the recovery efforts to retrieve the bodies are successful.

Jumwa told President Kenyatta to cancel the celebrations and instead, spend time with the grieving family.

The Malindi MP also said that the Kenya Navy and Coast Guard officers, scheduled to perform during the celebrations, should already have been fired.

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika criticized the government on how it handled search and rescue operations, recalling the prolonged search for her staff whose helicopter crashed into Lake Naivasha.

The senator stated that two of the five people who crashed into the lake in 2017 haven’t been retrieved to date.

Kihika criticized Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho for having preparations of the Mashujaa Day celebrations continue, while the country mourned the death of the Likoni Ferry tragedy victims.  She said that PS Kibicho and Transport CS James Macharia should be fired or resign.

She claimed that government officials who were required to handle the disaster were holding press conferences and boardroom meetings at the expense of search and rescue efforts.

Bomet Women Representative Joyce Korir added that the incident should be a wake-up call for the government to come up with a detailed disaster preparedness plan.
