Driver Breaks Stringent NTSA Rules to Save Pregnant Woman

It came as a surprise to many when the National Transport and Safety Authority, on October 4, announced that it would not take any action against a matatu driver pictured driving on the wrong side of the road.

The transport watchdog revealed that the vehicle had been given the green light to flout traffic rules, to attend to an emergency.

Through a statement on Twitter, NTSA announced that the vehicle was carrying a pregnant woman who was about to deliver.

NTSA contacted Mbagathi Hospital, where the woman was rushed to and verified that the health facility received the patient.

The move by the authority not to take any action sparked debate online as some accused it of promoting impunity while others hailed it for saving the woman's life.

"In such a situation the police would have taken responsibility and drive the woman to the hospital, they are well trained to handle such situations. NTSA stop promoting such rogue cops," one Ton Njenga tweeted.

Chite Chite, however, supported the move, revealing that his life was also once saved by a matatu driver.

The authority investigated the incident after a motorist posted the photo online, complaining about the behaviour of matatu drivers.

"This is what happens to people who know that nothing is going to happen. Because am sure this guy knew that they will be taken a video or a pic but he still did this.," Earl Gib captioned the photo.
