House Help Angle in Jubilee MP's Sister Murder Probe

Two people were arrested in connection with the murder of 41-year-old Jane Murugi at Membley Estate, Ruiru as The Standard reported on Tuesday, October 8.

Stephen Ndolo Kioo, husband to the late Murugi and their house help, Violet Nafula Wanjala were arraigned before Ruiru Senior Principal Magistrate Clara Otieno after the body of Murugi was found in a bathroom at their home.

Murugi, a clinical officer at Machakos County, was a sister to Githunguri Member of Parliament Gabriel Kago Mukuha. Her husband was the director of health in the same county.

Police investigating the alleged murder requested the suspects be detained for 10 more days in order to carry out a comprehensive probe into the murder of Murugi.

Patrick Okumu, who led the investigations, claimed that the husband had informed a neighbour on Friday, October 4, that his wife had committed suicide by hanging herself.

The neighbour then called the police who arrived to find Murugi on the toilet seat with a leso tied around her neck. Okumu also mentioned that a blood-stained vest was found in a heap of clothes near the bathroom.

Inconsistencies in the suspects' story and tampering of CCTV camera footage was also reported by Okumu who narrated that the police needed more time to investigate.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had already taken phones belonging to the suspects to their cyber-crime unit.

Toxicology tests on Murugi's body were ordered, with detectives taking contents from her stomach for further investigations.

"The duo's statements are inconsistent, hence more time is needed to carry out a thorough interrogation to investigate their call data and messages, and get test results from the Government Chemist," Okumu mentioned.

The suspects' lawyer, however, noted that the police did not need 10 days to conduct the investigations as DCI had already covered more ground.

Prosecution counsel Mary Maundu supported the call by the police to have more time for investigations. She reiterated that the duo needed to be detained for more days so as not to interfere with the investigations.

The couple had three children, a 9-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 2-months-old.
