Priest In Trouble Over Linturi-Kitany Divorce

A Catholic priest who claimed to have solemnised the marriage between Meru Senator Mithika Linturi and Mercy Kaimenyi was left tongue-tied after a tough cross-examination in court.

The Standard reported that on Wednesday, October 9, Jackson Micheni while at Milimani Law Courts, defended Linturi stating that the senator was already married and therefore could not marry Marianne Kitany.

"I officiated a Christian marriage between Mithika Linturi and Mercy Kaimenyi, who were young then, on April 8, 2000, at the Tigania Parish.

"It was a true marriage between Linturi and Kaimenyi. As you can see, I have also aged a bit since then," Micheni stated after a wedding video was played in court.

However, Kitany's lawyers, Cliff Ombeta and Danstan Omari, exposed the priest when a marriage certificate of Linturi and Kaimenyi was produced in court.

The two noted that the priest did not produce his practising licence during his appearance in court.

It was also noted that the marriage certificate he claimed to have witnessed being signed did not have his signature.

The court also found out that one of the witnesses to the marriage did not sign the certificate.

Further reports pinpointed that the document was certified in 2018 by another priest.

Linturi and Kitany had clashed over the divorce papers relating to Mercy Kaimenyi. Linturi alleged that Kitany had forged the papers while Kitany informed the court that DCI officials had certified the papers.
