Presidential Aspirant Cycles 488KM in Honour of Likoni Victims

A one time presidential aspirant on Tuesday, October 14, morning began a long and tedious cycle from Nairobi to Mombasa.

The cyclist Muthiora Kariara dropped out of the presidential race in 2017 to become the running mate to independent presidential candidate Japhet Kavinga Kaluyu.

According to a source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, Kariara began the 488km journey from Nairobi's Uhuru Park at 7 a.m. and by 2 p.m. he was already past Mlolongo, and at around 5 p.m. he was at Konza city in Machakos county.

The former presidential candidate intends to highlight seemingly persistent government impunity and negligence that is directly attributable to the needless loss of lives of Kenyans.

His newfound cause was motivated by the Likoni Ferry tragedy that claimed the lives of Mariam Kighenda, 35, and her 4-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) Commissioner Roseline Akombe also applauded Muthiora's initiative urging him on his good cause.

On Monday, October 7, members of a marginalised indigenous community arrived in Nairobi after a 400-Kilometre walk to present a  petition to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The team which consisted of members of the Sengwer community sought to implore President Uhuru to formally recognise them as a tribe.

The hunter-gatherer community also wanted the head of state to stop evictions from the Embobut forest they have called home for centuries, The Standard reported.
