How Moi Marked Mashujaa Day

Retired President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi celebrated Mashujaa day in a low-key fashion at his Kabarnet Gardens residence, in Nairobi, while President Uhuru Kenyatta led Kenyans to mark the day in Mombasa on Sunday, October 20.

According to Nation, Lee Njiru, Moi's Press Secretary informed the daily that the retired president followed the celebrations on live television.

"He was with close family members and friends," Njiru stated.

Moi hailed Kenyans who had sacrificed their lives for the country's development.

"He saluted heroes and heroines whose hard work, courage, patriotism and perseverance have had a great impact on the socio-economic wellbeing of the country and urged Kenyans to emulate them and contribute towards the prosperity of the country," Njiru stated.

Kenya's second president has lived a quiet life, mostly at his Kabarak home, Nakuru, after retiring from politics.

On Sunday, October 13,he was taken to the Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up, the Daily Nation reported.

Confirming the news, Mzee Moi's press secretary Lee Njiru stated that the former head of state was accompanied by his physician, David Silverstein.

“Yes, l can confirm that Mzee Moi visited The Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up. It is prudent for any human being to undergo regular medical check-ups, so there is nothing to worry about,” stated Njiru.

The news of his medical check-up came after Moi Day with the former president marking the day quietly in his Kabarak home in the presence of family and friends.
