Busy Nairobi Roads to Be Closed on Sunday

An alert has been issued to motorists, about the closure of roads in Nairobi as the county hosts the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on Sunday, October 27.

According to Standard Chartered chairman, Peter Gitau, the event will revert to the route used in 2016.

The eight affected routes will be closed from 4 am in the morning and will be opened from 12.30 pm, according to the organiser's website.

The race will kick off at Uhuru Highway, outside Nyayo Stadium, 200m from Bunyala Roundabout.

The racers will run all the way to Mombasa Road then along Forest Road and back to Nyayo Stadium.

The affected roads are Museum Hill, Forest Road, University Way, Kenyatta Avenue, Harambee Avenue, Haile Sellasie Avenue, Lower Hill Road and Langata Road.

Haile Selassie Avenue and Lang'ata Road alias South C roundabout will be affected.

The roads will be manned by police officers at the affected junctions and roundabouts to control traffic.

“We do not expect a major disruption in the flow of traffic. We have carefully organized traffic diversions to ensure that Nairobi county residents have alternative routes to critical locations in the city including hospitals, churches and airports,” Joshua Omukata, Traffic Commissioner, Nairobi County stated.

"Please use the traffic diversions and follow the police instructions. Traffic on the roads before 6.30 am is expected to be light," the organisers added.

The organisers plan to host over 25,000 participants and to raise Ksh60 million to go towards “Future makers”, their new community initiative aimed at supporting the youth in Kenya.
