NTSA's Strange Road Check Catches Motorists Unawares

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) conducted a unique inspection that shocked motorists on Wednesday, October 23.

The agency, famous for holding dramatic crackdowns against rogue road users, on this occasion decided to conduct an impromptu driver health fitness test.

The agency measured the blood pressure of the drivers and also briefly asked them questions on their resting routine.

"Road safety and compliance campaign currently ongoing at Kabete Roadblock. This is a joint operation between NTSA, and National Police as driver fitness is being tested," the agency posted on Facebook.

The agency informed Kenyans.co.ke that it was planning to conduct similar operations in different parts of the country.

"It started in the morning (October 23) and we plan to scale it. Road safety is a shared responsibility," a spokesman of the agency stated.

The move also astounded many drivers who had never been subjected to the procedure.

"Wasafiri wakae kwa gari wangoje mpime dereva pressure na diabetes? (You make passengers wait for you to conduct the tests on the drivers?) Why don't you ask the drivers to submit health check-up results to NTSA instead of doing this totally unnecessary drama?" Kipruto Martim wondered.

"I think I should pass over that place. Great job," George Best lauded the agency.

On Friday, October 18, NTSA  suspended 11 Public Service Vehicles (PSV) Saccos from operating within Nairobi.

The regulator maintained that the Saccos flouted provisions of Section 5 (1) of the NTSA Act which required a PSV Sacco or company to operate a minimum of 30 serviceable motor vehicles.

NTSA Director General Francis Meja advised commuters not to use vehicles from the suspended Saccos to avoid inconveniences.
