Expect Heavy Rains and More Floods, Weatherman Warns

Heavy rains currently pounding several parts of the country are set to continue into the weekend, the Kenya Meteorological Department reports.

On Wednesday, October 23, the weatherman warned the country to expect more rainfall between Wednesday and Sunday, October 28.

The warning by the weatherman came after North Eastern counties of Wajir and Isiolo experienced flash floods that led to the loss of lives and destruction of property.

The Coast, South Eastern, North Eastern, Western and Central regions including Nairobi were advised to brace for heavy rainfall in the following five days.

Areas, where residents should stay on high alert as reported by the meteorological department, include Kwale, Kilifi, parts of Tana River, Lamu, Migori, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Homa Bay, and Kericho among others.

Residents in the named areas were advised to be on the lookout for potential floods.

The weatherman advised that floods may suddenly appear in areas where it did not rain heavily and the floodwaters could be deeper and the water flowing faster than experienced before.

Residents were also instructed not to drive through or walk through moving water. Kenya Met advised residents against sheltering under trees, near grilled windows or walking in an open field.

Kenyans residing in landslide-prone areas especially the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges, Mt. Kenya and other hilly areas in the Western region were advised to be on high alert.

On Friday, October 11, a family of four from Elgeyo Marakwet lost their lives in a landslide after swathes of mud collapsed on their house.
