Amina Mohamed Goes After The Standard, Hires Powerful Lawyer

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed on Thursday, October 24, issued a demand letter to The Standard for publishing information she deemed defamatory.

The article in question was published on the publication's Thursday, October 24, issue, about claims that the Kenyan netball team was stranded in South Africa

In the demand letter posted by lawyer Donald Kipkorir on Twitter, Amina argued the article caused Kenyans to believe that she was to blame in that the information presented sparked the "Shame of Representing Kenya" and "Minister of Congratulations" hashtags that were trending on social media.

"Kenyans yesterday reacted angrily to reports that the national women’s netball team spent nights out in the cold in South Africa because they could not afford accommodation.

"The team is representing Kenya at the 2019 Africa Netball Championship in Cape Town.

"Kenyans took to social media to express their deep disappointment with the Ministry of Sports following revelations that the team was bailed out by a Cameroonian well-wisher who bought them milk and bread and offered alternative accommodation," a section of the article read.

This came after sports journalist Carol Radull via her twitter page shed light on the deplorable state the Netball team was in during their concluded tournament in South Africa.

"Our National Women's Netball Team is shamefully stranded and hungry while representing Kenya at the African Championships in Cape Town," the tweet read.

The government, allegedly, paid for their air tickets to South Africa where they left the airport and went straight to the court to honour their fixtures.

They were, however, shocked when they got to the Fomo Lodge hotel where they had booked and got turned back for failing to raise the deposit.

Reports from the ministry denied the allegations terming them as false while stating that the team had been catered for before the trip.
