The government, on Thursday, October 31, released a list of contractors believed to be derailing President Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy.
According to a report by Daily Nation, the list, which is before the National Assembly’s Transport, Public Works and Housing Committee, names some 14 companies that have failed to deliver road projects in time despite winning the tenders.
The committee is now demanding that the firms be compelled to return the tenders so that more deserving companies can get the chance to propel the country's infrastructure forward.
Some of the companies named include Gipsy, Kitho and Civicon construction companies together with Dickways construction and Bonafide Construction Company.
The others are Frontier Construction, Northern Construction Company, Anole Construction, Westbuild Construction, Pepeta holdings Limited, Nairobi logistics, Bridgestone Construction Limited and Nyoro construction.
The committee's chairman David Pkosing (MP Pokot South) revealed that the list, which the committee termed as non-performing contractors, had delayed the state's plan of achieving its target of constructing 10,000km roads.
“We are contemplating having an amendment to the Procurement and Disposal Act to bar such companies or other companies having similar or same directors from getting any other works,” stated Pkosing.
Gipsy had been tasked with building the Kutus-Kianyaga Road and the St Joseph-Ol-Kalou Road while Kitho won the tender for constructing Matuu-Ekalakala Road.
Civicon got the tender for the Kati-Kikima-Nduluku Road and OmoringamuKenynya-Motonto Road.
Dickways construction had been tasked with the construction of the Kirwara- Kigio-Blue Post Road, Bonafide Construction Company was awarded the tender for the Tumaini-Wakiongo Road while Frontier Construction was supposed to build the Lodwar-Loreningipi Road.
Uhuru had earlier threatened to blacklist all contractors who would be unable to complete their projects.
“People should not ask for jobs they cannot do. Any contractor who abandons his job halfway from now on will be blacklisted and not be allowed to get any deals in Kenya again,” Uhuru had warned.
