42-Year-Old Kenyan Beats Runners Half His Age in Tough Race

42-year-old Kenyan marathoner John Kipkorir Komen on Sunday, November 10, trumped runners half his age to clinch the victory in 37th Athens Authentic Marathon.

Kipkorir Komen arrived at Panathenaic Stadium in Greece after clocking 2 hours, 16 minutes and 34 seconds.

Another Kenyan, Daniel Muindi came in at fourth after just  2:21:39 during the legendary race.

In what turned out to be one of the most scintillating races in recent history, Kipkorir swept past Rwanda's Felicien Muhitira (who is 17 years his junior ) in the last few hundred meters of the race.

The Kenyan runner just seemed to burst into life in the penultimate phase of the race which was marked by a heavy downpour.

Over 60,000 runners from around the world came to the Greek capital and flooded the streets and avenues of Attica to compete in the classical marathon.

According to folklore, the 42-kilometre race to the ancient city of Athens kicked off back in 490 B.C. by Pheidippides - an Athenian messenger.

He allegedly ran all the way to the famous city to announce the Romans victory over the Persians, however, once he delivered the joyous news, it is claimed that he died of exhaustion.

Kipkorir's phenomena fete comes less than a month since his legendary compatriot, Eliud Kipchoge, became the first man to ever run a sub-2 hour marathon.

On November 3, another Kenyan - Matthew Kisoria, won the 2019 Beijing marathon, setting a new record.

Kisorio ran a full 42-kilometre marathon in a time of 2 hours 7minutes and 6 seconds, breaking the six-year-old course record of 2:07:16 set by Ethiopian Tadese Tola.
