Matiang'i Cracks Whip on GSU Officers Captured Brutalising Students

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i on Monday, November 11, addressed the disturbing clips making rounds on social media of police officers brutalising JKUAT students.

Taking to his Twitter, the CS stated that he was equally concerned by the conduct of the officers while quelling the protests by the students.

"I have observed the events at JKUAT today with profound concern. The use of force by police is clearly outlined in the National Police Standing Orders.

"I have spoken to the IG and we both agree that firm and decisive action shall be taken against any officer who used excessive force, within the next 24 hours," he assured.

The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) reiterated Matiang'i's order conveying, "firm and decisive action shall be taken against any officer who used excessive force at JKUAT within the next 24 hours."

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai issued a statement reminding officers that their actions needed not to be punitive and should be focussed on processing offenders for court.

"Officers have been trained on the need to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, and that, use of force must be legal and it must be applied to the extent that it remains proportionate to the gravity of the offence and with full accountability," he stated.

In the video that has caused an uproar on social media, policemen are seen brutally beating up a student with one officer going to the extent of stomping on the student's head.

Various leaders joined Kenyans in expressing their disgust at the conduct of the officers.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stated, "I'm so disappointed with the video that has gone viral of police officers brutalising a student at JKUAT today."
