ODM Legislator Arrested Over Assault

Police in Homa Bay on Wednesday, November 13 arrested a ward representative who was accused of assaulting the county assembly clerk on Wednesday morning.

Kojwach MCA Joan Ogada, who was elected on an ODM ticket, allegedly attacked Daniel Kaudo tore his clothes and destroyed property in his office for yet-to-be-established reasons.

Reports by the Daily Nation indicated that the MCA was in the company of other MCAs when the incident happened but her colleagues had since gone underground.

Homa Bay County Deputy Police Commander, Samuel Obara, confirmed the arrest and stated that Ogada would be arraigned after investigations were concluded.

"We are looking for the MCAs who escaped so that they can face charges. We want them to explain to us what happened," Obara affirmed.

Divisions in the Homa Bay County assembly deepened on Tuesday, November 12 after one of the feuding factions held a night sitting to avoid conflict with their opponents.

The drama ensued after embattled speaker Elizabeth Ayoo attempted to return to the assembly prompting a faction opposed to her to boycott the sitting.

MCAs in the county took sides in a leadership battle pitting Ayoo against acting Speaker Evance Marieba with Ayoo having been impeached in November 2018 over corruption and mismanagement claims.

She managed to obtain a temporary court order stopping her removal but was yet to reclaim her position in the county assembly.

On Tuesday, the ward reps allied to Marieba met from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, in a session presided over by the acting speaker after the team that has branded itself 'Team Sanity' boycotted the normal afternoon session that runs from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., citing avoidable circumstances.

In 2017 Ogada was suspended from county sessions for three months and fined Ksh70,000 for breaking the assembly mace during the election of the speaker.

Some of the legislators threatened to quit in 2018 over what they termed as constant wrangles.
