Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, on Tuesday, November 19, issued a statement after being on the receiving end of countless insults from leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto over the last few weeks.
Speaking from Serena Hotel in Nairobi alongside her Team Embrace unit - a group of women leaders who support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), the governor made it clear that she would not stoop to their level of insults.
"As women, we have to accept that we are in a very unique position with regards to influencing families and society. We cannot go low and expect our children and our society to go up, we must be role models and give a better example," she stated.
This was her first address following the barrage of abuses levelled against her after her decision to back ODM Kibra candidate Imran Okoth for the November 7 by-election, coupled with her open support for the BBI.
Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru hurled distasteful sentiments at the Kirinyaga governor over her marriage to lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo.
The visibly angry legislator went on to advise Waiguru to focus on her family instead of pushing the BBI agenda.
However, the Kirinyaga governor stood her ground and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to release the BBI report as soon as possible.
"As women leaders, we are supposed to be role models for our families and community. As Team Embrace, we want to distance ourselves from the politics of insults and therefore, we urge everyone to practice politics on an understanding that we can disagree without being disagreeable and insulting," she remarked during her address.
Governor Waiguru also touched on the latest incident involving Major Peter Mugure who was arrested in connection to the murder of his wife Joyce Syombua, 31, and his two children Shanice Maua, 10, and Prince Michael, 5.
"We are deeply disturbed by increased cases of femicide and killings within families which has only gotten worse lately. We urge the police to expedite investigations," she stated.
