IG Mutyambai Cracks Whip on Police Preaching in Uniform

The National Police Service led by Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai banned officers from preaching in uniform.

According to a report by Nation on Thursday, November 21, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Edward Mbugua, issued the statement.

The service also banned officers from attending church services in police uniform.

"While the National Police Service prevents the freedom of worship, the service will not condone the preaching by officers in police uniform unless within a police institution like colleges.

"Officers are encouraged to separate official duties and private engagement and act appropriately," Nation Media Group quoted the deputy IG.

In a video that went viral on social media in June 2017, a traffic police officer only identified as Pastor Afande was seen preaching to motorists in Zimmerman area as he was going about his daily routine.

Dressed in his police uniform and a reflective jacket, the officer vigorously shared the gospel, much to the surprise of motorists and pedestrians.

The officer was cheered on by onlookers as he broke down the scripture, emphasising the need for repentance among all ranks in the police service.

A police officer who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke stated that they were being targetted for preaching the gospel.

"We will not relent in the mission to preach the good news. However, we shall respect our bosses," the officer who spoke on anonymity affirmed.

Mutyambai ascended into office in April 2019 and made several changes in the police force. Upon appointment, he announced that all Officers Commanding Station would be referred to as Police Commanders. He also changed the OCS and OCPD posts to County and Sub-county commanders

He further added that competence and professionalism would be the guiding principles as he deployed police commanders across the country.
