Moses Kuria Forces Parliament to Act on Increasing Debt

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria on Tuesday, December 3, compelled the National assembly to commence investigations into the ever ballooning national debt.

Kuria was pushing for the formation of a committee to investigate the country's borrowing trends for the past 20 years under the leadership of president Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.

He had also wanted the committee to investigate the processes, terms and status of the government’s past and current domestic and external debts.

The committee was to inquire into the rising State debt which stands at Ksh6 trillion having risen from Ksh1.8 trillion in June 2013.

Despite ruling against Kuria's request, the speakers were forced to take action on the topic that the legislator was fronting in his appeal.

Muturi explained his decision to block Kuria's request by stating that the matters to be addressed by the proposed committee fall squarely under the mandate of the Committee on Finance and National Planning.

He further directed that the motion be heard by the Finance committee.

“The committee should also consider the various debt-related reports, and report back to the House,” directed the Speaker.

Muturi cautioned members against prosecuting business of the House in other forums.

“Moses Kuria is a member of BAC. I direct the committee on Finance to expedite examination of public debt-related statements and reports submitted to the House by the National Treasury on a quarterly basis,” Muturi ruled.
