Egerton University Closed Indefinitely

Egerton University's main Campus and Nakuru Town Campus have been closed indefinitely.

In a notice seen by Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday, November 4, the university ordered the students to vacate the premises by 2:30 PM on Wednesday.

"Following unrest by students over the demand to be allowed to sit for the exams without having cleared fees, the Senate, at its 505th meeting held on Wednesday, December 4, resolved to close the university with immediate effect," the statement signed by the Deputy Registrar read.

A well-placed source at the university confided to Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday morning that the rampage started when a majority of the students failed to clear their fees on time and were locked out of examinations slated to begin on December 5, 2019.

This was reportedly due to a move by the administration to institute measures that would enable only students who had cleared their fees to print their exam cards from their university students' portal.

The source explained that the move caught many of the students off guard, some of whom had fee balances and others who cleared their balances long after the deadline issued by the university and were thus blocked from sitting the examinations.

The move was also motivated by the administration's decision to call for students who were yet to clear their fee balances to defer their studies to the following academic year.

The student leadership had called for the students to gather by 10 am on Wednesday to protest the administration's continued silence on their grievances.

Police officers restored parity but not before massive destruction of property was recorded.
