President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, January 7, received a guest in the form of Umaro Cissoko Embalo, the president-elect of Guinea Bissau.
In a post by the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU), President Kenyatta met with his newly-elected counterpart at State House, Mombasa.
The former opposition leader and one-time prime minister flew to Kenya to ask the head of state to attend his inauguration ceremony slated for later in the month in Bissau.
Kenyatta accepted the invitation and wished Embalo and the people of Guinea Bissau success.
The two leaders also engaged in bilateral talks along the lines of national development and cooperation between the two countries.
"The leaders singled out the exchange of students and teachers, collaboration in technical training, trade, and security as some of the key areas of focus in bolstering cooperation between Kenya and Guinea Bissau," the PSCU announced.
The incoming president also praised Kenyatta's efforts on peace and stability in the region and the efforts to promote peace in Africa.
Reiterating the ties between East and West Africa, Embalo called for enhanced people-to-people interactions so as to boost continental integration efforts.
"The West African leader recalled the strong historical ties between Kenya and Guinea Bissau that date back to pre-colonial times and stated that there was room for the two countries to consolidate and expand their areas of cooperation," PSCU announced.
According to results announced by Guinea Bissau's National Electoral Commission (CNE) on Wednesday, January 1, Embalo won the presidential election with 53.55 per cent of the votes.
