Police Launch Manhunt After Suspicious Bag Found at Popular Supermarket

Police have launched a manhunt for two unidentified women after retrieving CCTV footage that showed them dropping a suspicious bag at Naivas Supermarket-Thika branch on Friday, December 20, 2019.

A review of the tape showed them dropping the bag, which had a firearm, at the luggage bay. They then entered into the supermarket and left a while later, leaving their bag behind.

K24 TV, on Thursday, January 9, reported that 40 rounds of ammunition, a laptop and several documents were found in the bag.

According to the supermarket's administrators, they decided to peep into the bag after it remained uncollected for over ten days.

The women hid their identities by wrapping scarves around their heads, with one wearing a pair of trousers and the other clad in a dress.

Beatrice Kiraguri, Thika Sub-County Police Commander, confirmed the incident and stated that the pistol was reported missing by a  licensed firearm holder on December 30, in Kandara, Murang'a County.

The owner's car was broken into while he was attending a funeral ceremony in Kandara.

"The gun-holder reported the incident at Kandara Police Station the same day, and detectives commenced a search for the stolen property.

"I urge supermarkets, malls and other commercial premises that are regularly visited by members of the public to report to police cases of bags and belongings left unclaimed for more than one day,” she informed the outlet.

The supermarket branch managers stated that they would hold a security meeting on Thursday afternoon, January 9, to discuss the matter.
