Did Jubilee Party Appoint Elachi as Nairobi Deputy Governor?

Jubilee Party on Thursday, January 9, addressed reports that it had nominated Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi, as the deputy governor.

Through its social media, the party denied the claims after a statement circulated online alleging Elachi's nomination.

"As you are aware, Nairobi County faces a unique leadership crisis following the arrest and arraignment before court of Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, who owing to the nature of charges facing him, is effectively unable to carry out the official duties of the Nairobi governor.

"As the majority party in the Nairobi County Assembly and by virtue of being the sponsoring party to Mike Sonko's leadership, it falls on us to step in and show leadership so that the residents of Nairobi are not denied of the services they need," read the fake statement.

Further, the statement claimed that Elachi had been appointed following a special meeting by Jubilee Party's top leadership.

"Ms Elachi has steered the Nairobi County Assembly through troubled times and has demonstrated sober leadership in her capacity and the party is in full hope that she will offer the best leadership to the residents of Nairobi," the statement that has since been declared as fake read.

The circulation of the statement comes three days after Sonko nominated Ann Kananu Mwenda as his deputy.

Sonko made the nomination despite a court order barring him from conducting official county business while under trial for corruption-related charges.

Mwenda currently serves as a chief officer in the Department of Disaster Management and Coordination at City Hall - a position she has held since April 2018.

In the letter, Sonko had justified his decision as being in line with Article 180 (5) of the Constitution of Kenya, and the Supreme Court Advisory of March 2018.

"I therefore humbly urge the assembly to expedite the vetting process of the said nominee, for purposes of appointment, as per the provisions of the County Government Act, Section 8 (1) (a)," he stated.
