Baringo Senator Gideon Moi picked a new fight with Deputy President William Ruto as the battle to take control of Rift Valley ahead of 2022 elections.
Daily Nation, on Saturday, January 11, reported that KANU aimed at taking control of the second phase of BBI talks in Rift Valley and seize the region from DP Ruto.
The deputy president has been the region's kingpin for seasons long, however, the region is at a crossroads over it next political journey following the release of the BBI, considering KANU wants to seize the moment to lead the talks in Rift Valley instead of DP Ruto. This will also increase Gideon Moi's popularity in the region.
"We were the first to express our total support for BBI before the other team (Ruto allies) changed their mind. We have set up a secretariat, which we expect to be ratified by the party soon.
"We could have adopted it in December but most of our members were on holiday. We came up with resolutions as a party, which will be looked into further by the secretariat. We want to make sure our people have read it, understood it and are ready to make wise decisions. The secretariat's duty is to ensure the report reaches them," Nick Salat, KANU secretary general informed the news outlet.
KANU aims at pushing for a powerful prime minister post, a move which is a pain in the flesh for Ruto's allies.
"This is a total waste of money. In fact, this second round is an ODM affair. They are now asking ODM governors to use money belonging to the counties to organise useless meetings they are calling consultative talks. We will not engage in such wastage," Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei responded.
"We will be where most Kenyans will want to be. If Kenyans want an executive prime minister or not, we will be there; if the status quo remains, if it is a hybrid, if you call it a general governor, we will be there as well. We will not accept to be taken in circles with the sole intention of locking out one person," Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen argued.
On Friday, January 11, Ruto criticised the Kisii meeting attended by ODM Party leader Raila Odinga and Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, stating that it was a waste of taxpayers money as Kenyans had not accessed the document to read for themselves.
"We agreed to prepare enough copies of the BBI report so that Kenyans could read for themselves and make personal decisions. When did it change, that party leaders were going to read it on behalf of Kenyans and make decisions for them?" Ruto questioned as he addressed members of the public at Esibakala Primary School, Emuhaya, Vihiga County.
