DCI Dismantles Notorious Nairobi Phone Theft Syndicate

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reined in on a notorious phone theft ring based in Kamukunji, Nairobi.

Taking to social media on Sunday, January 11, the directorate announced that it had managed to make the arrests based on information that the stolen phone dealers had set up an operation base in the area.

"DCI and police officers based at Kamukunji, in pursuit of information on notorious stolen mobile phone dealers, raided a shop within Muoroto along Jogoo road where they recovered a total of 515 assorted mobile phones, majority of them being smartphones," they wrote.

The DCI also announced that they had managed to arrest three individuals in connection with handling stolen property.

This, they stated, was because the three could not account for all the phones in their possession.

"The trio will appear in court, will be charged with having in their possession suspected stolen property contrary to Section 323 of the Penal Code and the recovered items presented as an exhibit," DCI announced.

This is the second of such arrests and recoveries conducted by the DCI in the recent past.

In October 2019, DCI sleuths recovered 262 mobile phones, computers and accessories from a suspected theft ring based in Kayole and Central Business District.

The swoops were led by Kayole and Kamkunji police stations bosses Wilson Kosgei and Stanley Atavachi and led to the recovery of 154 mobile phones, two laptops, and one tablet.

The swoop also lead to the arrest of seven suspects identified as John Njenga, Noah Wanyoike, Brian Ojiambo, Zablon Gathambi, Lawrence Baraka, Brown Okutoi and Simon Mwangi.

Suspects nabbed during the DCI's raid in Kamukunji on October 26, 2019.
