Moi's Minister's Posh Hotel Auctioned Over Ksh80M Debt

A posh hotel owned by a minister who served under retired President Daniel arap Moi is set to be auctioned to recover a Ksh80 million outstanding debt.

According to a report by Business Daily on Tuesday, January 14, former Cabinet Minister Gideon Ndambuki, moved to court to block the auction of Roof Garden Hotel situated near Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos County.

Ndambuki served as the Planning and National Development docket in Moi's regime.

The six-storey hotel was put on sale by Garam Investments Auctioneers and will be auctioned on February 3 at the firm's offices in Westlands, Nairobi.

As at January 2020, the debt had totalled to over Ksh 122 million and the creditors felt that the ex-minister was behind schedule to repay his debts.

On the ground floor, a restaurant, bar, kitchen and cashier's office are run, while the first floor encompasses a bar. The other floors hold guest houses.

The hotel reportedly earns the ex-minister approximately Ksh 1 million per month.

Ndambuki unsuccessfully vied for Makueni gubernatorial seat before his appointment as NSSF chairman in 2017.

Ndambuki's name joins a list of high profile personnel facing auctions. In 2019, former Nation FM and Kiss 100 presenter, Angela Angwenyi's, house was also put up for auction by  Garam Auctioneers after her finances dwindled.

Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju was on Tuesday, January 7, dealt a blow by the High Court after a multi-national bank was allowed to pursue Ksh1.4 billion from his restaurant over a loan default.

Jacaranda Hotel, a four-star hotel located in Westlands, Nairobi and is owned by the family of the late Defence Minister Njenga Karume was on Monday, January 6, also put up for auction. The franchise is set to be auctioned to facilitate the recovery of a Ksh 257.6 million owed to a bank.
