Govt Announces New Fuel Prices

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on Tuesday, January 14, announced the new fuel prices.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the energy sector regulator indicated that the new prices would take effect from January 15 midnight in all parts of the country.

In Nairobi Super petrol will retail at Ksh111.20, Diesel at Ksh102.32 while kerosene will retail at Ksh103.95 while in Kisumu Super petrol will retail at Ksh 110.60, Diesel at Ksh 102.92 and kerosene at Ksh 104.56.

“Taking into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows.

“Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene increases by Ksh0.70, Ksh0.54, and Ksh1.64 per litre respectively,” read the statement.

In Nakuru Super petrol will retail at Ksh 109.80, Diesel at Ksh102.12 and kerosene at Ksh 103.76 whereas in Eldoret, super petrol retails at Ksh 110.60, Diesel by Ksh 102.92 and kerosene by Ksh104.57.

The regulator further cited increased landing costs and the performance of the Kenya Shilling against the US Dollar as reasons for the increased fuel prices.

“In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019, Legal Notice No.196 of 2010 and Legal Notice No. 26 of 2012, the EPRA has calculated the maximum wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products, which will be in force from January 15, 2020, to February 14, 2020.

“The pump prices are inclusive of 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018, the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 109 of July 9, 2019, and the revised rates for Railway Development Levy (RDL),” the statement further read.

On December 14 2019, the government announced a decrease in fuel prices as from December 15, 2019, to January 14, 2020.

In the announcement, super petrol, diesel and kerosene decreased by Ksh1.09, Ksh2.83 and Ksh1.75 per litres respectively.

The announcement indicated that fuel prices retailed at Ksh109.50, Ksh101.78 and Ksh102.31 respectively in Nairobi from December 15 2019.
