26-Year-Old Making Millions From Dreadlocks

At 26 years, Mwangi Muthoni is an entrepreneur who takes pride in his unique work, earning him millions, having established the Nairobi Dreadlocks and Beauty Salon in 2014 and growing the brand to reputable levels operating in Nairobi CBD.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mwangi intimated that after a life of blogging about dreadlocks, he eventually ventured into the business that had not been embraced by many at the time.

Mwangi further recalled how rejection pushed him towards starting his own business in line with his passion.

“I completed my college education in 2012 where I pursued a Diploma in Information Technology. Unfortunately, my appearance (dreadlocks) made employers reject me and this pushed me into entrepreneurship.

“I started off with a small salon at Midtown Business Centre and to my surprise, the business attracted a lot of clients. I now identified this as my area and decided to maximise on it,” remarked Mwangi.

Due to the growing demand in the dreadlocks services, Mwangi relocated to a large space at Kenya Cinema Building, where he expanded his business and introduced new services to the clients.

“I decided to venture into other dreadlocks services including grafting, crocheting, retouching, detox, colouring and also making artificial and temporary dreadlocks.

“We also ventured into sister locks that are charge between Ksh 35,000-Ksh 80,000 per client while instant locks are charged between Ksh 30,000 - Ksh 60,000 per client. However, the common retouch and treatment is charged at Ksh 2,000 while fresh locks charged at Ksh 3,500,” remarked Mwangi.

Due to the growing number of clients, Mwangi decided to venture into beauty services that complemented the clients’ satisfaction.

“After some time I ventured into beauty services including facials and nail services like acrylics, ombre nail, and poly gel application.

“We also introduced pedicure and manicure services. After a growing demand by customers, other services like nail technology and extensions were introduced,” added Mwangi.

Due to the growing number of clients in the facility, Mwangi has been able to grow as an employer to offer opportunities to other youths in the society.

“The dreadlocks business has been growing each year. Currently, I have six employees and the number is growing.

“I also started training unskilled youths who are later absorbed in the dreadlocks business, therefore, giving them an opportunity to grow,” remarked Mwangi.
