Uhuru Rushes to Family Event, Leaves Ruto Behind

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday, January 26 left members of a church congregation in stitches as he explained his decision to speak before the end of the service at Africa Inland Church (AIC) Milimani in Nairobi County.

Uhuru attended Sunday mass alongside Deputy President William Ruto at the church where Bishop Abraham Mulwa was also installed as Presiding Bishop of AIC, taking over from Silas Yego who retired in December 2019 after serving for 18 years.

Yego, in the middle of the service, told congregants that Uhuru had another event to attend as he invited him to speak.

Uhuru evoked laughter as he told the church the trouble he would face if he missed a family function he was to attend after the service, further joking about taking family matters seriously with retirement on the horizon.

"I wanted to stay until the last minute but I told the Bishop I had a family engagement, and if I miss it I will be told 'Now you, every time we have a function you never attend'

"And you know someone does not work their whole life, later on I'll have to go back to my family so I have to take care of things there also, not just taking care of things here.

"Even Bishop Yego here has a wife, he's going home. He will be waking up in the morning and they will be drinking tea when the wife reminds him there's no work today and goes back to putting on her pyjamas," the President joked.

In his address, Uhuru also congratulated Bishop Mulwa on his installation as Presiding Bishop, noting, however, that he had big shoes to fill.

"Bishop Mulwa, you are filling a huge pair of shoes, but I am certain you have the capacity and I confirm that you have my support and that of my government.

"We can say all we want but it is only God who knows. To serve God is to serve your neighbour and those who are below you," he asserted.

The President was escorted out of the church by Ruto along with a large entourage.

The Deputy President returned to the service and addressed the congregants towards the end of the service.
