A woman, who was allegedly brought into Deputy President William Ruto's official residence by a security officer, was charged in court with stealing a weapon at the posh house.
A story published by The Standard on Tuesday, January 28, reported that Elsie Kazungu alias Gladys Wanjala, ostensibly stole the gun which was under the police constable's pillow at the DP's official home in Mombasa.
It is believed that Kazungu later sold the firearm at Ksh 3,000 to Joshua Oliech in Kisauni. The duo was arraigned in court on Monday, January 28, with two counts of theft.
According to the charge sheet, on December 19, 2019, the two stole a mobile phone valued at Ksh 1,200, a Ceska pistol serial number E1546 loaded with 15 bullets from DP's house.
Chief Magistrate Edna Nyalotti released the two on a Ksh 200,000 bond.
The police constable, attached to the Special Crime Prevention Unit based at Central Police Station, is said to have picked the woman from Mombasa's Moi Avenue during the late-night hours.
Questions were raised over how the woman was let into the residence, which heavily guarded.
Police reportedly conducted the investigation secretly, as they launched a manhunt for the woman who escaped after stealing the gun, only to be arrested later and charged on a separate incident.
The officer's name, however, was exempted from the charge sheet and the authorities could not reveal whether he was still on duty.
"We cannot tell you where he is because we are still conducting an investigation," Mombasa DCIO Anthony Murithi affirmed.
