The impeachment of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has cast doubts on the survival of embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is also facing similar graft charges.
On Friday, January 31, photos of Sonko with ODM leader Raila Odinga at Capitol Hill, surfaced alongside those of printed t-shirts and branded vehicles which many claimed indicated that Sonko sought Odinga's cleansing from graft charges.
In the photos, Sonko was spotted wearing a navy blue coat, a blue tie, a white shirt with grey trousers, while Odinga wore a grey checkered coat with a light blue shirt. The two cheerful leaders hugged and smiled.
"While Ferdinand Waititu was barred from accessing his office, quickly impeached by the Senate, his counterparts like Okoth Obado (Migori), Sonko, Mwangi wa-Iria (Murang'a), and Anyang Nyong'o (Kisumu) who face similar charges are dancing to BBI rallies.
"Everyone knows that Sonko parted with tens of millions of shillings of stolen public money. That's the truth," exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna joined thousands of Kenyans in lashing out at Sonko.
However, the photos are not from a meeting alleged to have happened in January 2020. They are of a meeting between Sonko and Odinga, yes, but in April 2018, right after the handshake of March that year.
"Governor Mike Sonko stopped by Capitol Hill this morning to have a chat and bounce ideas on the future of this great city. Nairobi is a great city with massive potential and I urged him to continue performing his duties diligently for the greater good of our people," Odinga stated in April 2018.
The National Super Alliance (NASA) principal further advised the county boss to ensure that he fulfils the promises he made to Nairobi residents.
"If you dance to the so-called BBI tune you are safe, if you are on Baba's side you become a saint all of a sudden, selfish politicians we have to take them to prison," Brian Rono tweeted.
"Sonko visited Odinga and asked for forgiveness citing bad influence and friends for advising him not to support BBI. He was rinsed off his miscreant behaviour and henceforth desist from associating with tanga tanga," a Facebook user posted.
Nairobi County director of communications Jacob Elkanah played coy with the issue upon being consulted.
He did not respond to the direct question but opted to inform Kenyans.co.ke that Sonko had issued executive orders waiving single business permit fee for youth and persons with disabilities effective from February 1, 2020.
