How Teacher Triggered Death of 14 - Kakamega Pupils Reveal

UPDATE: Western Region Government Pathologist Dickson Mchana confirmed that six of the 14 pupils killed in Kakamega Primary School stampede died of suffocation.

Former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale had, in an earlier video, lamented that none of the pupils who passed away had any blood stains.

On Monday, February 3, a total of 14 pupils from Kakamega Primary School were reported dead after a stampede occurred as they were running from their classes at around 5 pm.

Journalists who spoke to a number of pupils from the school on Tuesday, February 4, reported that the stampede occurred after the children spotted a teacher headed towards their direction with a cane.

"The building, which has three floors, has a staircase on each side. One of the staircases is only used by teachers while the other is used by the pupils. The teachers monitor the children who are supposed to move out in a certain order.

"Yesterday, at around 5 pm, the teachers are said to have been in a meeting, hence, the pupils did not have anyone to monitor them," Citizen TV's Laura Otieno narrated.

"After some time, however, a teacher came from the meeting with a cane and on seeing this, the pupils started running and some fell down," she added.

The stampede left 14 pupils dead, with 38 others who sustained injuries rushed to Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

Reports indicated that some pupils fell on a section of a staircase at the school and were ran over by more students running out.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has since ordered for the school to be closed temporarily until Monday, February 10 to allow for a probe into the matter.

President Uhuru Kenyatta condoled with the families on Monday, February 3 and expressed hope for a quick recovery of the 38 pupils.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta last evening sent a message of comfort to the families of the children who lost their lives following a stampede at Kakamega Primary School.

"The president wished the injured children quick recovery and ordered for a thorough investigation to establish the cause of the unfortunate incident," a statement from State House read.
