5 people Killed Along West Pokot-Turkana Border

Five people were reportedly killed in a deadly attack launched by armed bandits along the West Pokot-Turkana border on Friday night.

More than 7 raiders are said to have attacked Amolem village at around 6 pm on Friday with an aim of stealing goats.

They killed four people in the Pokot Central village and one in Nakwomuru village in Pokot North.

Confirming the attack, West Pokot County Police Commandant Mathews Kuto, stated that one of the deceased was killed after a peace meeting on Friday morning.

“A peace committee of ten people went to Nakwomoru for negotiations with Pokots to recover stolen cattle. The meeting was cordial and two of the negotiators from Turkana decided to remain behind after the meeting, one was killed and the other escaped,” Mr Kuto noted.

This incident happened even as security operations led by the police and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the volatile North Rift region continues.

The recent wave of attacks in the area has led to the death of dozens of people while more than 10,000 others have been displaced.

Last month over 130 schools were closed indefinitely due to attacks by armed bandits in the region.

In the same month, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered for the deployment of KDF soldiers to assist in the flushing out of armed bandits orchestrating the attacks.
