Embattled Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina, reiterated his stance after he was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigation officers on Tuesday, February 25, on his way out of Royal Media Services after an interview.
The ODM senator recorded a video inside the DCI jails, captioning it as a message to the Maa community.
Despite facing hate speech over his remarks on Citizen TV's JK Live show on Wednesday, February 19, Ledama insisted that he would pursue justice for his community, in a selfie video he recorded behind bars.
"This is a message to the Maasai nation. Today I was arrested by DCI officers. I am inside this lovely prison here and I want to say that I am in the quest for truth and justice. No amount of intimidation is going to deter me.
"I will pursue justice for the rest of my life. That's why I am proud to be one of them (Maa)," Ledama stated in the recorded video.
His lawyers while speaking outside the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) stated that the senator was illegally detained.
"She is one low-level government officer who has no right to detain the senator. She is taking us back to the previous regimes. Why can't he be released? His fingerprints have already been taken. We are going to court, let the court decide. We should know that there is a freedom of expression even if it has limits.
"There is something called artistic expression. We have seen the likes of Kipchumba Murkomen (Senate majority leader) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South MP) attack President Uhuru Kenyatta and have been acquitted after their arrest.
"There is no charge sheet in Ledama's arrest. They are relying on hearsay and news. I am asking the state to release him with immediate effect before tensions escalate. Our government is a reconciliatory government. They should release him so that we reconcile," Professor George Wajackoyah stated.
In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Ledama had been asked to appear before the DCI Narok office on Monday, February 24, to shed light on the utterances he made on TV.
He had been warned that failure to appear before the DCI as demanded would lead to his arrest and subsequent arraignment in court.
Ole Kina insisted that it was within his mandate as the senator of Narok County to articulate the issues affecting the area residents without fear.
"A coward dies a thousand lives, a soldier dies one life. I am ready," Ledama informed the media outside RMS studios.
