Kenyan Rugby Star Tony Onyango Collapses and Dies

Kenyan rugby star Tony Onyango died after collapsing in his house on the night of Tuesday, March 3.

Sports journalist Eric Njiru told Kenyans.co.ke that the Kenya Sevens and Simba fullback had come home from training with his team when he later collapsed at his Ngong home.

"RIP to Kenya Simbas, Kenya 7s and KCB Rugby star Tony Onyango who died on March 3, 2020. Tony and I were friends since the days he played for Homeboyz Rugby and worked at Homeboyz Kenya," Eric Njiru posted.

Onyango leaves behind a wife and a son. 

He was taken to Umash Funeral Home located opposite Armed Forces Memorial along Mbagathi Way, Nairobi.

The Kenya rugby fraternity, members of the public and sports teams joined in sending condolence messages to the family of the deceased star.

"It’s a sad morning waking up to the news of the sudden demise of KCB Rugby and Kenya Simbas player Tony Onyango. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the entire KCB rugby fraternity," a tweet by Mean Machine rugby team read.

Shujaa pride asked members of the public to pray for the deceased's family and stand with them through this trying time.

"It is with seismic disturbance that we announce the sudden demise of our KCB Rugby player Tony Onyango Opondo. This happened at his home in Ngong on the 3rd of March 2020," a statement by Shujaa pride read in part.

"A great player, a great father & a very good man! The tour chronicles at the back of the Strath bus with will forever be cherished brother rest in love Tony!" Fahad Baptiste tweeted.

"Top Kenyan Rugby player Tony Onyango collapses and dies in his house. Such sad news to wake up to. May his soul Rest in Peace," sports journalist Carol Radull's message read.

"We join the Kenyan Rugby fraternity in mourning Tony Onyango Opondo of KCB RFC and Kenya Simbas who passed away. We're Sending our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and the Kenyan community at large," a statement by Heathens RFC read.

"We join the entire Kenyan rugby fraternity in mourning Tony Onyango Opondo of KCB Rugby Club who passed away on Tuesday 3 March 2020. Tony had played for the Kenya national team across all representative levels," Kenya Rugby Union stated.

Onyango attended Maseno High School before he joined Strathmore University for his college education. Over the course of his career, he had successful spells playing for the Impala Strathmore Leos, Menengai Homeboyz, KCB RFC, Kenya 7s and 15s teams

He won the National Sevens Circuit with his former club Homeboyz in 2016 and Kenya Cup title with his current club KCB when they beat Kabras at Kakamega in 2019 and was part of the golden Strathmore Leos squad that reached the Kenya Cup final in 2013.
